Banská Štiavnica is known for its rich mining history and well-preserved medieval architecture. It flourished during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance as one of the most important mining towns in the Kingdom of Hungary. The town’s wealth came from its rich deposits of gold, silver, and other metals, which attracted miners from across Europe.

The historic center of Banská Štiavnica is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its unique urban layout and well-preserved mining infrastructure. We explored the town’s narrow winding streets, colorful Renaissance-era buildings, and impressive churches, including the iconic Holy Trinity Square and the Church of St. Catherine.

At the end of the day, we went to eat at a local brewery Pivovar ERB. The food was really delicious, and so was the beer.

One of the most remarkable features of Banská Štiavnica is its network of mining tunnels and shafts, which are open for guided tours. These tunnels provide insight into the town’s mining heritage and the harsh conditions faced by miners in the past. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to explore them at this time.
